I have been searching for ideas on how to do this. Found several tutorials that Americans have made, but they do not make real collets. This is the first video showing how to do it. TYVM :) This video has changed the way I am going to try it. I will need to accurately grind the outside and inside though after hardening. I think I will slit it last too. I can use a sunnen hone to clean it up after slitting if I think I need to, but I bet some emery cloth while it is in a lathe will do it. I found another video on youtube where the person makes a real collet, and is Russian too. Russians can make real collets, Americans maybe can not lol.
wow great work. It looks like This is what I will have to do, I have a bridgeport H head that takes 2VB collets. Hardinge sells one collet for $250! and this one guy on ebay is hoarding them and has a whole collection selling for $800.
